Ba Tu Chee? “What is it to you?”
By Sina Farid
Our response to the Taliban, the patriarchy, and any/all male informed policies on women’s rights and freedoms. Ba Tu Chee? “What is it to you?”
About: Sina Farid is an Afghan-Canadian artist and founder of Afghan Peach; a non-profit art and apparel brand aimed at providing humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. With a bachelors in Neuroscience and a graduate degree in Global Health Policy, her post-graduate goals included reshaping health care systems and policies in rural Afghanistan, where accessibility is especially scarce. After the Taliban takeover in August of 2021 and the subsequent financial sanctions imposed on the country, Sina’s focus shifted on bringing money into Afghanistan to provide urgent humanitarian relief.
“Afghans across the globe were collectively mourning the loss of their country to the Taliban, the loss of women’s rights and freedoms, and 20 years of progress. I painted this piece as a way of coping with that devastation but also to pay tribute to the strength and determination of those women. I wasn’t trying to start a business or be labelled as an artist, and I have no formal art training. Art was my form of therapy and activism and I am beyond humbled to see the impact this painting has had in providing life-saving relief in Afghanistan and hope to continue with new pieces for our summer collection.”
